“Hangwa Warak at Gangnam Station – A Modern Korean Dessert Café with Gelato and Traditional Juak”

If you’re in Gangnam and looking for a dessert spot that blends tradition with a modern twist, Hangwa Warak (한과와락) should be on your list.

This unique Korean dessert café offers everything from gelato made with traditional ingredients to beautiful Korean-style fried treats called juak (주악), all in a beautifully designed hanok-inspired space.

I ordered a scoop of injeolmi gelato, a flavor inspired by traditional Korean rice cakes dusted with roasted soybean powder. The gelato was creamy, subtly sweet, and incredibly nutty. It had a chewy texture that perfectly mimicked the rice cake feel—innovative and nostalgic at the same time.

Other gelato flavors include black sesame, yuja (Korean citron), mugwort, and more. It’s exciting to see how traditional Korean ingredients are being reimagined as gelato flavors.

Located just a few minutes’ walk from Gangnam Station Exit 11, Hangwa Warak is a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. The café sits in a white building with a blue roof that gives off a clean, almost Santorini-like vibe. It’s a 3-story structure with a different atmosphere on each floor—perfect for chilling solo or catching up with friends.

  1. 1F: Order counter and pick-up
  2. 2F: Casual seating with warm wooden tones and traditional Korean décor
  3. 3F: Tatami-style floor seating and a small rooftop terrace

The interior blends Korean tradition with modern minimalism—think soft lighting, traditional lattice designs, and Korean craft touches. The background music even features calming Korean string instruments. Truly a multisensory experience!

Next up, I tried the Omija Ade, a fizzy drink made with omija (five-flavor berry) syrup and sparkling water. The drink was visually stunning, with layers of deep pink syrup blending beautifully into the clear bubbles.

Taste-wise, it was everything I hoped for—tangy, slightly tart, and incredibly refreshing. Perfect for a hot summer day, or when you want to cleanse your palate between bites of dessert.

One of the most unique items at Hangwa Warak is their juak, a traditional Korean fried sweet made with glutinous rice. But here, they take it a step further—offering modern flavors like grape and corn.

  1. Grape Juak: Crispy on the outside, chewy inside, with a generous topping of grape jam. A beautiful mix of textures and flavors.
  2. Corn Juak: Savory-sweet and nutty, with the subtle flavor of corn shining through. It was simple but addictive.

These bite-sized snacks are perfect for pairing with drinks or enjoying on their own. They’re not greasy and leave you feeling satisfied without being heavy.
